The 2006 European Swimming Championships were held in Budapest, Hungary, from the 26th of July to the 6th of August 2006. Events included swimming, diving, synchronized swimming, and open water swimming. Budapest served as the European Championships` host city for the third time. The competition has already started on the day of the opening ceremony. Two events of the swimming and long distance swimming competitions took place on Wednesday, the long distance swimming event on the open water of Lake Balaton. The official opening ceremony was held on the 26th of July 2006, at 8 pm. The opening ceremony started with the entrance of Hungarian Olympic champion swimmers Novák Ilona, Temes Judit, Czene Attila, Rózsa Norbert, Szabó József, and Wladár Sándor, and water polo players Dömötör Zoltán és Markovits Kálmán. At the end of the parade Darnyi Tamás raised the Hungarian national flag, water polo player Kárpáti György raised the one of LEN, and Újvári László Olympic diver the one of the capital. Opening speeches were given by Bartholo Consolo, the president of LEN, and by Hungary`s prime minister Gyurcsány Ferenc. The prime minister gave his speech in both English, and Hungarian.

As closure to the event, popular Hungarian band NOX performed their song „Embermadar” which was written by composer Imre Czomba, followed by a Croatian-Hungarian friendly water polo game.
